From my journal…Sept 11, 2001

Today, please allow me to digress….

I was born and raised on Long Island, New York.  I would ride my bike down the street to the beach and look across the Long Island Sound and see those two amazing towers in the distance… you couldn’t make out the whole skyline…just those two beautiful towers.

twin towers

Here are some lines from my journal that I kept during Sept 2001.  (I left New York in 1988, but New York never left me.)  My daughters were 6 and 8 years old at the time, and I was working as a nurse.

“….as I listened to the reports, the sounds of mass hysteria, reporters scrambling, etc. the realization of what was happening set in.  All I wanted to do was to be with my husband and children.  No one knew what was coming next…I did not do a very good job that day at work.  I hurried to finish and rushed out to get my kids from school.  Large businesses, in fear of being hit, closed all over the city.  The roads were full at 12 noon.

It was a strange feeling to be driving, thinking that at any moment something else could happen.  It was a very erie thing to look up into a blue sky and see no planes, hear no planes-nothing. It was very weird.”

I learned a lot that day.

I learned that my friend’s sister, a newlywed, married only 6 months, was 6 weeks into her new job and was at a breakfast meeting at Windows on the World at the top of the North Tower when the plane hit.  (read an article written by her niece.)

I learned that you can never count on your life, liberty, or your security to be there every day.

I learned that no matter what happens, with faith and love, anything can be overcome.

Prayers to all the friends and family of the victims.
Prayers to all the first responders who selflessly gave their lives trying to save others.
Prayers to all the men and women in the armed forces.  May they serve with honor and come home safely.

Peace to all.

  1. I too am from LI, lived there my whole life till 5 years ago, and remember the day very well. I remember the F14s flying overhead, and the smoke when the wind shifted. What would happen next we all wondered.
    Peace

  2. That piece that you have written in your journal in 2001, is exactly what I felt like even though I am a South African. Scared of not knowing what is going to happen next. We thought about a possible World War 3.
